With that being said…

I wasn’t always an expert in my field.

Not too long ago, I was the one trapped in a nightmare of sleepless nights.

You see, I traveled across the Middle East as a U.S. Marine.

Although I was proud to serve my country, I faced intense pressure on an almost non-stop basis.

As you can probably guess, my mind and body were at their breaking point.

There’s one thing I couldn’t predict though.

And that’s my endless cycle of sleepless nights.

Here’s what my day looked like…

I woke up at the crack of dawn to blaring horns.

Even though the volume of my “alarm” pierced my eardrums…

My body felt like a 2-ton sack of potatoes.

I’d practically crawl out of bed with my eyes closed.

Safe to say, 5 hours of 30-minute spurts of sleep wasn’t cutting it.

At work, I’d drag my feet, squeezing out every little drop of energy to do simple tasks…

Yet I’d transport shipments to the wrong building…

And couldn’t make it to formation on time.

As I’m sure you can guess, my supervisors chewed me out like a toddler who spilled juice on the carpet.

Insomnia

When it was bedtime, I’d flop onto my bed with bags under my eyes.

But instead of getting some restful shut-eye…

My mind would replay events from the day, or things that never even happened.

I’d stare at the ceiling – begging to God that he’d help me sleep.

But like some cruel trick…

My eyes would burst open with adrenaline pumping through my veins.

When I’d look at the clock, it was usually 2 or 3 PM.

…Which made my heart jackhammer out of my chest even more.

I thought this would all end when I returned to the USA as a civilian.

Unfortunately, I was wrong.

When I started university, I’d be in a haze during every class.

No surprise…my grades started dropping fast.

Yet that was nothing compared to how my mood changed.

I’ll never forget when I got into yet another argument with my girlfriend.

Remember how I was a marine?

Well, I never lost my old habits of keeping everything tidy.

So when my girlfriend didn’t help clean the bedroom for days…

All my exhaustion and stress erupted like a volcano.

“Would you clean up after yourself? I’m sick of living in a pigsty!”

Her jaw dropped to the floor…like I ripped her heart out of her chest.

She looked up at me with her innocent, blue eyes – speechless.

We went back and forth screaming at the top of our lungs…

Once I noticed her eyes welling with tears, I raised my arms to apologize…

But it was too late.

Girlfriend

“Zach, it’s like you’ve become a different person!”

She grabbed her bag and rushed out the door.

How could I deny it?

I was sleepwalking through life.

When she got home after a long day, I didn’t ask how she was doing.

I snapped at her at the tiniest things.

Worst of all, my passion for her turned into envy.

When I’d lie in bed – wired from head to toe…

I’d stare at my partner sleeping like a baby.

A part of me wanted to nudge her awake.

I just wished she could know what I was going through…even for 1 minute.

Heck – I’d trade a winning lottery ticket to be able to sleep like her for a single night.

As these dark thoughts spun through my mind like a hurricane…

I decided enough was enough.

Coffee to Stay Awake

Over the next few weeks, I tried every sleep solution under the sun…

  • I stopped drinking coffee
  • I turned off electronics at least 1 hour before bed
  • I read books instead of watching reruns of The Sopranos
  • I wore an eye mask and used blackout curtains
  • I lowered the temperature
  • I drank herbal teas
  • I even changed my mattress

The list goes on.

Although my sleep might’ve improved a bit…

These changes simply weren’t powerful enough to give me decent shut-eye.

That’s when I decided to try
the most popular sleep aids.

Let’s start with melatonin.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone released by your pineal gland.

It regulates your circadian rhythm to control your sleep-wake cycle according to SUNY Downstate Medical Center.[1]

Most importantly…

A large meta-analysis with 1,683 subjects found that melatonin helped people fall asleep 7 minutes faster, sleep 8 minutes longer, and experience more restorative sleep.[2]

Sounds pretty good, right?

No wonder why 57% of people say they take melatonin to fall asleep faster in a recent Sleep Foundation.org survey.[3]

But there’s a dark side to melatonin.

Disrupt Circadian Rythym

You see, your pineal gland naturally releases melatonin to help you fall asleep.

Back in the hunter-gatherer days, sleep was simple.

Humans slept when it was dark out and woke up when the sun came out.

Nowadays, sleep is complicated thanks to modern lifestyle including constant stress, sitting indoors most of the day, and being surrounded by artificial light.

All these things can disrupt our body’s natural circadian rhythm.

However, there’s one thing that wreaks havoc on your circadian rhythm and sleep the most…

Blue light.

Blue Light

Harvard University reported that blue light suppresses your body’s natural melatonin TWICE as long as other forms of light…

And shifts your circadian rhythms TWICE as much.[4]

As a result of this, people supplement with melatonin.

Big mistake! Here’s why…

Dr Wurtman, director of MIT's Clinical Research Center, reported that melatonin pills often contain 10 TIMES the effective dose.

These mega doses “fry” your brain’s receptors…

So you become unresponsive to melatonin’s effects.[5]

This is something known as the
“Melatonin Paradox.”

To put it simply, blue light disrupts your melatonin production…

Yet taking melatonin also blocks your ability to produce melatonin.

It’s an easy way for multi-billion dollar supplement companies to keep you on their leash for good.

Unfortunately, the negative effects of melatonin don’t end there.

According to the Mayo Clinic, melatonin can also give you pounding headaches, feelings of depression…

And get this…

Melatonin can even make you MORE tired the next day![6]

Due to this darkside of melatonin, you can’t even buy it over the counter in most of the world…except in the USA.

Blue Light

Other sleep aids aren’t any better either.

In fact, many OTC sleep aids are NOT meant to improve your sleep.

Some of them are actually anti-allergy medication.

As for prescription sleeping pills…

Most of those are re-skinned antianxiety and antidepressant medications.

Virtually none of the sleep aids were even designed to improve sleep.

So if melatonin and sleeping pills aren’t the answer…

How in the world can you finally sleep like a “normal” person?

That’s the question I asked myself years ago.

I didn’t find the answer until I discovered
an Italian study about your tongue.

And what I discovered changed my life forever.

So please listen very carefully.

The Italian scientists reported the biggest cause of sleep apnea is weak TONGUE muscles and low electrical activation.[7]

No doctor told me about a link between my tongue and sleep.

So I went down the rabbit hole.

According to Johns Hopkins University, your tongue is like the gate that either blocks air or allows air to flow.

Over time, your tongue gets weaker.[8]

This changes its position in your mouth, also called tongue posture.

Instead of being suctioned to the roof of your mouth…

Your tongue’s natural resting position is drawn back into your mouth.[9]

Oxygen Blockade

This change in tongue posture blocks the flow of oxygen and collapses your airway…

Forming something called an “oxygen blockade…”

Because it prevents oxygen from reaching your bloodstream and tissues.

But why is that such a problem
for people with sleep issues?

Well, a decrease in oxygen activates your body’s survival mode.

In other words, an oxygen blockade signals to your brain that you are dying!

Scientists from Loma Linda University School of Medicine found that survival mode floods your veins with adrenaline.[10]

That’s the stress hormone preparing you to battle an enemy…or run for dear life.

When you’re in survival mode, your mind begins racing.

You're on edge all night.

And you’re tormented with unsatisfying spurts of sleep—if you sleep at all.

In fact, a clinical study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that an oxygen blockade enhances your ‘survival mode’ by 167%.[11]

So instead of getting some restful shut-eye…

You’re on high alert as if an 800-pound grizzly bear is standing on 2 legs and towering over you.

Make sense?

So Let me give you a quick recap:

  • Your tongue gets weaker with age.
  • Your tongue draws back into your mouth and blocks airflow – forming an oxygen blockade.
  • This happens while you work on the computer, drive your car, and of course, while you sleep.
  • The oxygen blockade activates your body’s survival mode.

And THAT is the reason it’s like a Mariachi band is playing in your head once you slip under the covers.

Insomnia

Your tongue is why you stare at the ceiling for hours.

Your tongue is why you jolt awake at 3 AM in the middle of the night.

Your tongue is even why you may snore like a gas-guzzling motorcycle…

Because when your tongue obstructs your airways…

The air particles collide with the narrow opening…

Creating the loud, obnoxious snoring that disrupts your sleep and your partner’s sanity.

I know you may still be skeptical…

So here’s a 5-question quiz to help you determine whether your tongue is the real issue.

…And that’s exactly what scientists tried to do by implanting a device into their necks.

Harvard-affiliated Mass General Brigham decreased sleep apnea scores by a whopping 78.9%.[13]

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association with 584 participants found stimulating the sleep nerve helped them enjoy deep, blissful sleep.[14]

A 12-month study published in the Journal of Sleep Research slashed sleep apnea scores in HALF.[15]

My boss even gave me a nod of respect after he saw me breeze past my co-workers.

And when I got home, my girlfriend was still giving me the cold shoulder.

So I walked up to her and swept her off her feet like she was a feather.

I loved seeing her smile from ear to ear.

But that wasn’t enough.

She started taking little jabs at me during dinner…

Thanks to my relaxed mood, her comments bounced off me like I was bulletproof.

And she definitely noticed.
